What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone to restore the missing root structure of one or more teeth. Since titanium is biocompatible, these posts fuse with the jaw tissue to become replacement tooth roots, which can then support a custom-made dental restoration placed on top. Dental implants can be used to restore any number of missing teeth in the mouth, regardless of where or when they were lost—and with proper care, they have the potential to last for decades or even a lifetime.
Experience and Expertise You Can Trust

Dental implants are an investment in your smile’s future—and while their long-term success is ultimately reliant on you, it’s still important to ensure that your dental implant journey is starting on a positive note. Dr. Bustillo-Gonzalez has completed a Fellowship with the American Dental Implant Association and has been placing dental implants herself since 2008, meaning that she is expertly qualified to ensure a smooth and precise process that provides you with the complete, functional, and beautiful restorations you deserve.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process can usually be organized into four main steps:
- Initial Consultation – The first step of your dental implant journey is meeting with Dr. Bustillo-Gonzalez. She will examine your mouth to ensure that you’re in decent oral health and have enough jawbone density to support dental implants. Patients sometimes need preliminary procedures like bone grafts or periodontal therapy before they can receive implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery – Your mouth will be fully numbed, and the implants will be placed at precise angles and locations beneath the gumline, depending on how many are needed to address your tooth loss. Dr. Bustillo-Gonzalez can complete the entire dental implant surgery right here in our office!
- Osseointegration/Abutments – The implant posts will need several months to fuse with your jaw. This process is called osseointegration, and it’s what enables your implants to fully support your replacement teeth and preserve your jaw tissue. Afterwards, you’ll return to receive your abutments, which are connector pieces that go on top of the posts.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Finally, once everything has healed up, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutments, and you’ll be ready to enjoy all the benefits of having a complete, functional smile once more!
